"Tortorella is a master motivator, whether it be with words of encouragement or a dose of tough love that often results in benchings within games. No one is immune from that"
Kate, what about your own thoughts on each of them?
I'd like to take my time and look at them all more in depth.
The reason this all came up was because earlier this year someone I know well told me my personality reminds them of Tortorella. They basically laughed and told me to check out my 'twin', in a way.

kate, i see the clips and decide after one minute. so there is not so much to explain. mainly intuition . you can exclude sx very fast, as you know. so/sx and sp/sx is also a bit of special and striking.
so we have to decide between so/sp and sp/so as to these 3 guys ive typed so far. i see so-charming and broadcasting more or less. alain vigneault and quenneville stackings are more difficult than tortorella's to type right away.

Hockey is very difficult to watch. I can't keep up with that little tiny puck zooming around the ice.
lol yeah that's why once the NHL expanded past the northern states, where it's been a popular sport for a while, the stations put this laughable streak effect on the screen so fans could keep up with where the puck is.

But I find the thuggish streak running through North American hockey fascinating.
It's an aggressive game.

Posted - 14 Jun 2012 : 4:23:56 PM Tortorella: 8 or 3. Hartley: 3 Vigneault: 8 (that one I am most certain of. beyond any doubt) Therrien: 8 or 6 Ruff: maybe 1 with slight chance of 8 Laviolette: 8 Quenneville: 8, 6 or 1
Afterall, I don't know any of these guys and only wrote down my first impression. Subtypes, wings and so on doesn't matter, as you posted that may guys. In that sport there are certainly a lot of 8s, 6s and 3s and also some 7s. Thats has always been my impression.

Joel Norman Quenneville (born September 15, 1958 in Windsor, Ontario) is the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks professional ice hockey team. He is a former ice hockey defenseman and former head coach of the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues. He is known affectionately by fans and players as "Coach Q."
Peter Laviolette Jr. (born December 7, 1964) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman and is the current head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was previously the head coach of the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes, the latter which he led to a Stanley Cup championship in 2006.
Lindy Cameron Ruff (born February 17, 1960) is the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. Ruff played in the NHL for the Sabres and New York Rangers as a left winger/defenceman. Currently, he is the longest-tenured head coach in the NHL.

Get the sense that he's personally (single-handedly) taking on the role of barrier between the team and the rest of the world.
Yeah, that's part and parcel, to a significant degree, of being a coach. Part of it will sure be in the personality, but I'm looking at other top coaches to get more context and see how others build that in their own way.
Having watched many hockey games, this:
"Get the sense that he's personally (single-handedly) taking on the role of barrier between the team and the rest of the world."
is pretty across the board SOP of a skilled coach. But the way it shows up and and how they are off the ice, talking casually in one-on-one interviews as well as in press conferences, which is different than in the heat of the game, shows more of their personality.
There is something they do have in common, which I'd like to examine by all this.
I'd be interested to hear what others think the rest of the coaches types are.

There's a reason I asked about Tortorella. But, it got me looking at other coaches to compare personalities.
Robert Hartley (born September 7, 1960 in Hawkesbury, Ontario) is the current head coach for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League. He coached the Colorado Avalanche from 1998–2002, period during which he won the Stanley Cup (2000–2001). He also coached the Atlanta Thrashers from the 2003 up until the beginning of the 2007, when he was fired after the Thrashers got off to an 0–6 start. Hartley was enjoying a successful media career as a hockey analyst for the French-language RDS television channel, but in summer 2011 signed for the ZSC Lions: where he was the head coach in Zurich, Switzerland.
Alain Vigneault (born May 14, 1961) is a Canadian professional head coach with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also coached the Montreal Canadiens, as well as in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During his career with the Canucks, he won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach of the year in 2006–07 and has become the team's record holder for wins as a coach. As a team, Vancouver has won back-to-back Presidents' Trophies (2010–11 and 2011–12 and made one Stanley Cup Finals appearance (2011) under Vigneault. Prior to his coaching career, Vigneault played professionally as a defenceman for six seasons in the NHL, Central Hockey League and American Hockey League (AHL). In the NHL, he played 42 games over two seasons, 1981–82 and 1982–83, for the St. Louis Blues.'
Michel Therrien (born November 4, 1963), is the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. Prior to that he was a player, then head coach for the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Therrien coached the Canadiens for three seasons, taking them to the Eastern Conference semi-finals in the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs. During the 2006–07 season, he coached the Penguins to one of the most successful single-season improvements in NHL history, finishing with a 47–24–11 record (105 pts), a berth in the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs, and a nomination for the Jack Adams Award, as the NHL's best coach. The following season, the Penguins under Therrien made it to the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals, ultimately losing to the Detroit Red Wings in six games.
On February 15, 2009, with the Penguins struggling to make the playoffs, the Penguins organization announced that it had relieved Therrien of coaching duties and had promoted its AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma to serve as interim head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Posted - 13 Jun 2012 : 4:46:31 PM My first thought was 3, sx subtype, maybe 4 wing but then he seemed too much of a badass for this and the 8 grew on me... so afterall: 3 or 8.
