Al Swearengen as an 8 in "Deadwood". I thought the portrayal and the writing was dead-on and very nuanced from tough--ruthless--to extraordinarily protective at times. I think a lot of tv characters are amalgams and so don't ring true to real-life types, but this one did. Some great writing at HBO.
