No, that's my opinion about what Obama has done, individually.
But: "Nines have sometimes been described as the common people of the Enneagram. When healthy, they possess a deep personal modesty and an elegant simplicity of thought. Healthy Nines are even-tempered, stable, unassuming, nonjudgmental and comfortable with who they are. They often have a cheerful Seven-like outlook, though they live in the present and not the future."

Good will Along with Patience, For Obama.
(that will give him about 2 years of real power. He will be able to get a lot done in that time. )
President-elect Barack Obama is riding a powerful wave of optimism into the White House, with Americans confident he can turn the economy around but prepared to give him years to deal with the crush of problems he faces starting Tuesday, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.
While hopes for the new president are extraordinarily high, the poll found, expectations for what Mr. Obama will actually be able to accomplish appear to have been tempered by the scale of the nation’s problems at home and abroad.
The findings suggest that Mr. Obama has achieved some success with his effort, which began with his victory speech in Chicago in November, to gird Americans for a slow economic recovery and difficult years ahead.
Most Americans said they did not expect real progress in improving the economy, reforming the health care system or ending the war in Iraq — three of the central promises of Mr. Obama’s campaign — for at least two years. The poll found that two-thirds of respondents think the recession will last two years or longer.
As the nation prepares for a transfer of power and the inauguration of its 44th president, Mr. Obama’s stature with the American public stands in sharp contrast to that of President Bush.
Mr. Bush is leaving office with just 22 percent of Americans offering a favorable view of how he handled the eight years of his presidency, a record low, and firmly identified with the economic crisis Mr. Obama is inheriting. More than 80 percent of respondents said the nation was in worse shape today than it was five years ago.
By contrast, 79 percent were optimistic about the next four years under Mr. Obama, a level of good will for a new chief executive that exceeds that measured for any of the past five incoming presidents. And it cuts across party lines: 58 percent of the respondents who said they voted for Mr. Obama’s opponent in the general election, Senator John McCain of Arizona, said they were optimistic about the country in an Obama administration.

The one difficult typing for me was Biden. I think he is 6w5 sp/so now and I finally have the same conviction in that typing as the other typings. I had him as a 3w2 until I recently remembered someone from my past who was his twin...same 6w5-3w2-1w2 trifix...sp/so too and also looked like him...around 6ft even with the same big forehead and smiling pattern.
Obama easy 3w4 so/sp...I can think of a half-dozen more 9ish 3s that are more difficult typings off the top of my head. 3w2 so/sp Tim Tebow in the college football bowl games is one of them. 3s like Obama are all around...just gotta be able to attract them. The Obama as a 9 fad really perplexes me. I think the mistyping boils down to two things...a lack of a 3w4 in their life who vibes like him...and an inability to understand that a 3 can downshift to what seems to be 9 much easier than a 9 can upshift to 3.
What else...Palin easy 2w3 so/sp...McCain easy 8w9 so/sp...not worth going into.

I already posted all of Obama's quotes from that article on the other Obama thread. R & H summed it up as Obama acting like a 9w1 so people would like him. What ever. I also posted quotes from 1985.. all very 9w1. R & H said the same thing. Obama acts like a 9w1 so people will like him. What ever. They even try to claim Obama was trying to act like Lincoln long before he ever read Lincoln. Like somehow Obama had the ability to control all of his natural 3w4 instincts in order to act like a 9w1 so people would like him. Obama chose to act like a 9w1 to keep the peace and conflict around him down... so that.. who knows... he could trick us into thinking he was a 9w1. R & H don't really know themselves. They are scraping to explain it.
No matter,
We just have to look to Obama's past to see what Obama is going to in the future. Obama is the most steadfast man around. Even more so than Bush. Obama is never changing in his identity... to the point of being a bore once you figure him out.
With out doubt Obama is a big government liberal. Obama also likes to find some common ground with those that don't agree with him.
Obama enjoys intellectual debate with people of different view points and does not seem at all threatened by them. On all fronts.. Obama is not threatened by people who may be smarter than he is. Obama likes to learn.. while still remaining steadfast to his own personal philosophy. Obama's personal philosophy is based on peace keeping and civility along with some core principles that involve integrity, humanity and working towards a goal that is larger than yourself.
Obama seems to have found a personal philosophy that I think would be worth studying for types 9, 3, and 6. Obama has tapped into the best of all 3 types and has found a way to make them work together and has achieved high health because of it.
(Obama at 21) 9's need to learn will power and figure out their own value system.
Obama the reader blossomed during the two monkish years he spent finishing up his degree at Columbia University in New York. "I had tons of books," he told his biographer, about this time in his life. "I read everything. I think that was the period when I grew as much as I have ever grown intellectually. But it was a very internal growth."
Obama himself went through a period of "devouring" the work of Nietzsche while living in New York.
"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."
- Nietzsche
(Obama at 25) 3's need to learn how to choose a path that is bigger than themselves.
Obama has described Niebuhr as "one of my favorite philosophers."
“Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing true or beautiful makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore, we are saved by love.”
- Niebuhr
(Obama's core nature) 6's need to learn how not to be threatened by different view points and focus on finding common ground.

Sure they would.
The authenticity you see is real and that's why I fell in love with him." - Michelle Obama 9/2007
But the EIDB would rather believe Obama is 'acting' nice to win approval for his personal gain (3 at level 5) rather than compulsively seeking common ground and being naturally phlegmatic in temperament to avoid conflict in his surroundings (9 at level 5).
I clearly disagree with them. Obama the campaign puts on a 3 mask over his phlegmatic type 9 temperament. Not the other way around.
The Phlegmatic's Emotions
* Low-key personality * Easygoing and relaxed * Calm, cool and collected * Patient well balanced * Consistent life * Quiet but witty * Sympathetic and kind * Keeps emotions hidden The Phlegmatic At Work
* Competent and steady * Peaceful and agreeable * Has administrative ability * Mediates problems * Avoids conflicts * Good under pressure
The Phlegmatic As a Friend
* Easy to get along with * Pleasant and enjoyable * Inoffensive * Good listener * Dry sense of humor * Enjoys watching people * Has many friends * Has compassion and concern
The assertive enneagram personality types fall in the Choleric Temperament: Obama has never shown any natural choleric reactions. I don't care how skilled a 3 is at "acting nice" to get people to like them. Under stress the low side of a Choleric temperament starts to show.
Choleric temperament is identified by quick, vehement reactions to stimulus.
Both McCain, Bill Clinton an others in the assertive trade show signs of the low side of a choleric temperament when under stress. Obama never does. Never has.
Weaknesses of a Choleric
The Choleric's Emotions
* Bossy * Impatient * Quick-tempered * Can't Relax * Too impetuous * Enjoys controversy and arguments * Won't give up when loosing * Comes on too strong * Inflexible * Is not complimentary * Dislikes tears and emotions * Is unsympathetic
The Choleric At Work
* Little tolerance for mistakes * Doesn't analyze details * Bored by trivia * May make rash decisions * May be rude or tactless * Manipulates people * Demanding of others * End justifies the means * Work may become his god * Demands loyalty in the ranks
The Choleric As a Friend
* Tends to use people * Dominates others * Knows everything * Decides for others * Can do everything better * Is too independent

I think they have a very good relationship.
Michelle and Barack Obama have spoken publicly about their marriage before and throughout the presidential campaign. Since being elected to the presidency, the marriage of Barack and Michelle is under more scrutiny.
Kathlyn Hendricks: “Not only does [Barack Obama] love his wife, he respects her,” said Hendricks. “The model of harmony, shared humor and easy communication that the Obamas reveal really is a new model — if ordinary citizens practiced this each day, our world would transform very quickly in positive directions ... The Obamas’ body language, expressions and gestures all match. That's an indication of harmony rather than conflict. When Michelle came out on election evening, she and Barack spoke and touched as if they were alone. Then they turned to the audience. If they can communicate that way in public in front of hundreds of thousands of people, their bond is very solid and real.”

Funny how even a one-time "stoic" 5w6 can exhibit irrational behaviour when their opinions are challenged.

obama reaches out for mccain's counsel Is he doing this to maximize efficiency or to avoid future conflict?
According to political analyst Mark Halperin, Biden has shown "a persistent tendency to say silly, offensive, and off-putting things"; The New York Times writes that Biden's "weak filters make him capable of blurting out pretty much anything". He & Palin have something in common. Palin's no 2 - she has no radar and she doesn't flatter without a script. |

As irrational as I've become on this issue, I do think that I correctly see Obama's compulsive reaching out to others for help and assistance as in part representing 6ish insecurity and dependence. Much in contrast to Presidents Clinton's and Carter's compulsive independence. |

I can't help but remember Obama vs Hillary in the South Carolina debate. That is the only time I have ever seen Obama high strung and nervous. He was tripping all over his words. The reason was because Hillary and Bill had been knocking the crap out of him on the campaign trail and Obama's team told him that he would need to get tough and throw a few punches of his own. Obama was a nervous wreck because the pressure was on for him to have a face to face clash with Hillary. I ending up feeling sorry for Obama that night because Hillary was so much cooler and sharp.
Obama also always has a support network and Daddy figure in the back ground.
I'm pretty sure one of the hidden reasons Obama chose Biden as VP was because Biden is a good daddy.
I can always see the child in Obama grasping for daddy when he is under pressure.
Obama is never short of a Daddy figure in the back ground.

The same kind of insecurity and dependence can be seen in the psychological history of Abraham Linclon. Also, the "humble service to others, commitment, and trustworthiness," which the EI attributes to Obama as a three "going to six," can be seen in Lincoln.
The Enneagram Institute: "If Obama were a Three, however, Enneagram theory predicts that we would see movements toward the healthy side of Six (the Direction of Integration expressed in humble service to others, commitment, and trustworthiness), which we see in Obama." |

Everyone,
It might help clarify things if people went back to Personality Types and quoted some of the actual descriptions we have written about the various types involved. As we have said, we believe Obama is a healthy Three, often reaching into the higher Levels. Here's a couple of paragraphs of the Three at Level 1:
quote: At their best, very healthy Threes transcend their desire to be affirmed by others and accept themselves as they are. They are no longer motivated by a concern for what others think of them or a desire to obtain applause or admiration. Rather, very healthy Threes shift their center of gravity to become inner-directed and self-generating; in so doing, they plant the seeds of their own interiority, their own feelings, their own identities. Their development becomes interior and personal, a matter of changing attitudes and deepening values rather than overt outward behavior.
Like many of the qualities of the very healthy Three, the ability to be inner-directed may not sound like much at first, but this is only a testament to the degree to which the illusions of the modern world have entranced us. To be truly inner-directed is a rare accomplishment. It does not mean that one is led by emotional reactions or fantasies, by avoidance or fear or compensations, any more than it means being influenced by the opinions of others or by prevailing tastes and mores. To be inner-directed is to follow the truth of one’s own heart and to act and speak from that place.
When healthy Threes do this, they are inspiring and genuinely affecting. They communicate in a way that touches others and motivates them to pursue higher purposes. Their self-expression is direct and entirely authentic. Healthy Threes feel deeply, but they are not sentimental or effusive. Rather, theirs is a steadiness of the heart that takes in the truth of themselves and others with a childlike simplicity and compassion. Again, authenticity may not sound like much of an accomplishment until we consider how few moments in life we express our genuine feelings and perceptions to others. These moments are usually rare and precious, and entail a profound acceptance of self and others. p. 103-104
Also, we have seen virtually none of the passivity, disengagement, dissociation from reality, denial, wishfull thinking, complacency and other average Nine qualities so much in evidence in Bush (at Level 5) and slightly lower. At least some foreshadowing of these traits would be evident in Obama if he were a Nine. Instead, we do see hints of some average Three traits, although the average Three is difficult to pin down to a few characteristics since Threes when they are in the average range are so "appropriate"--and their appropriate behavior and words can change from moment to moment, and from person to person. Here are a couple of paragraphs from Level 5:
quote: The problem is that they act according to the needs of the image they are projecting, not according to their own real needs and not because they sincerely believe in what they are saying or doing. Average Threes learn to project one simulated emotional state after another, each appropriate to the situation and each equally convincing. They may appear to be sincere, friendly, modest, kindly, repentant, virtuous, and truthful, although they may not be. They may have only adjusted their image to meet the demands of the moment so that others will think well of them. What they appear to be and what they actually are begin to be quite different. Thus, there is an element of slickness, an emotional hollowness about average Threes because much of what they say and do is not a true reflection of who they are. "Who they are" is becoming ever more difficult to identify, both for others and for themselves. * * * It is important to stress how subtle average Threes can be in projecting a believable image, and how difficult it is for others to detect whatever degree of inauthenticity is involved, especially if a particular Three is intelligent and well-educated. This personality type is by no means limited to vacuous television game show hosts, beauty contestants, or cloned yuppies. Average Threes can be found everywhere, in every profession, from MBA's to self-help instructors, from sports figures to politicians, from artists to network anchorpersons. page 113-114
We also think that Obama is difficult to type because he is a Three with a Four-wing, SO, and this subtype Variant may not be as well described as others. (Bill Clinton, for example, is a 3w2 SO--a much more common type in politics and the public eye.) But we have known and worked with many "laid back" 3w4's who are temperamentally, emotionally, and energetically exactly like Obama: they are invariably charming, easy-going on the surface (while a ball of energy and ambition beneath the surface), articulate, professional (and sometimes "professorial"), cool and not too emotionally expressive (often making them think they are Fives or Nines), and somewhat aloof from people--opening them to the criticism that they have a "superior" attitude and are elitist, and so forth--virtually all observations that have been made about Obama.
In the end, time will tell. As he makes decisions, and as events force him to reveal more of his real self, we will have a clearer picture of what type he really is. (It is also worth noting that we have a personal contact with someone well-placed in the Obama Administration who is himself a Three, and he thinks that Obama is a Three....) In any event, we are sure that virtually everyone on this Board wishes him well as he begins to lead the country out of the Bush Debacle.

If, as you believe, Obama is operating in the 3-5 level range, wouldn't we see more than of "hint" of average Type 3 behavior, behavior that you could point out to everyone.
Can you supply everyone with some evidence in video or described in print of his average three behavior.
Can you point out to everyone some reports by others which describe average three behavior like that in your quote?
It might be helpful if you supplied some objective evidence to correlate your own subjective perceptions.

Clinton was doing everything he could to intimidate Wallace as he was asking the first question.
I type Edwards 3w4. He's an attack dog. He relies more on his intellectual ability to outsmart others.
Both Clinton and Edwards are primarily interested in distinguishing themselves from others.
Obama seems to be reaching out to belong with, or to, others. That's consistent with Nine, but not Three.

Obama's leadership style, from when he was head of the Harvard Law Review 20 years ago to the picking of his cabinet and transitioning to the presidency, fits very well this description of Type Nine.
"The Enneagram at work"
TYPE NINE : The Peacemaker, The Mediator
