Rich,
I believe it. It seems like there's a big difference between the Lounge and the main restaurant area.
I can call and check, too. The Key Lime pie runs $8 in the Lounge. Dessert isn't my thing, so it's only a point of reference to see if there's another choice that we may want to consider.
I'm happy that we likely have a good choice that works (King's Fish House) and if other choices materialize that could also work or offer something unique, then no harm in considering them, is how I look at it, even though eventually we will need to commit to just one (or two ) for that evening.
Warm Tollhouse Pie . 7.5 With walnuts, French vanilla ice cream, dark chocolate shavings, hot fudge sauce Godiva Swiss Chocolate Cake (for 2) . 12 Dark Swiss chocolate cake layers infused with Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, chocolate ganache frosting, raspberry sauce, chocolate truffle Key Lime Pie . 8 Individual deep dish, raspberry coulis, toasted meringue, candied lime zest Crème Brûlée . 7 Classic creamy custard, caramelized turbinado sugar, fresh berries New York Style Cheesecake . 7 Sun-dried cherry sauce, fresh whipped cream Fuji Apple Cobbler . 8 Cinnamon-brown sugar roasted apples, crispy streusal topping, vanilla bean ice cream Trio of Fresh Seasonal Fruit Sorbets . 7 French Vanilla Ice Cream or Seasonal Fruit Sorbet . 5 French vanilla ice cream, seasonal fruit sorbet |

That reminds me of the evening three ladies from my workplace came to one of my usual hangouts for dinner, drinks, and to hear me sing at the piano bar.
One of the ladies had retired on the same day that I did – it was that very day – so she was celebrating. Another lady had retired a couple years back, and the third was still working.
The third lady was less impressed with my singing, and more impressed with the fact that she was sitting at the next table over from Clint Eastwood. We were at Clint’s saloon and his best friend from Texas (who also enjoyed singing at piano bars) was celebrating his 70th birthday. So, Clint’s saloon is one possibility.
I also know a good French bistro in the area. And there are some seafood places. If you like Mexican food, I can think of at least one. Presumbly, you’re coming with your husband and your three(?) kids.

No talk of the selection of food on the menu; not a single word. But, for whatever reason, the location and the ambiance had to be suitable for an evening of sparkling conversation, chemistry, and energetic exchange. That was my take, anyway. ( end quote )
To be honest, both my wife are the SJ temperament, and are both in the 2-3-4 triad As I said above about Parkers' Lighthouse, is a steak staring at $25, the best steak you will ever have? I hope so, but there is also the consideration, of how many times you will be able to do that. I, for one, went into the cost of the various places. My wife and I have a favorite eatery, which has great service, very good food, and we spend around $25 plus tax and tip for the both of us. Sure, we also go more expensive places, but we go in knowing what we are going to pay. If one is considerate of other people, you have to give them a head's up about things like that. Who wants to be suddenly caught up short, by finding out that you are now stuck at such a place, and have to go along with everybody else, spending much more than you need to? I will be interested to met some posters, the experience won't be made any better by blowing a wad unnecessarily on the meal....

Okay, Abi… Now that ride at the Stratosphere is on my Bucket List. So is the roller coaster at the New York, New York hotel.
Would have taken both rides during the IEA conference in Vegas, if it weren’t for the fact that I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery only 30 days before the conference.

In a group where people people don't have a lot of regular life contact, and may have varied budget or dietary considerations, it would be a real bummer if they decided not to join in because of that. So, this is a way to address those type of concerns.

In fantasy, you don't have to go into cost and menu. Also, if it does become a reality and finances etc. are not a consideration or can afford to be in the background, then sure the sky is the limit. You don't even need to be sx first for this. My co-conspirator on various fun adventures over the last several years is a 7 wing SX laster.

Ya know, Abi… I always thought that was so ridiculous!
First they charge you more than they should for the ride. Then, for an additional charge, they capture your little adventure on DVD.

Ya, I agree.
There are other rides on the top of the building.
Actually, one of the things I like doing out there is going to the Atomic Testing Museum. It brings back lots of memories of the 50s and B sci-fi movies.

Abi, I have been there too, but the biggest weakness of the museum is to down play the radioactive fallout that ended up in Nevada and Utah. And, the cancers that the people down wind later got.
I too have the same memories of the b sci-fi movies, how else would you end up with 12 foot ants as in " Them "? Radiation is a word that just isn't common as it once was.... In the 1950s the b movies plainly said that humanity was meddling with things it didn't understand, but wildly over-estimated how much it did know.

Speaking of Sci-Fi… when the IEA conference in Vegas kicked off, the Star Trek Museum at the Hilton had already been discontinued. We missed it by just a few months.

Please let us know where and when we are meeting at the Westin. A jolly walk in the late afternoon zephyr, is the very thing. I will be wearing my AT&T jacket, which has my name ( Rich ) woven on the front. If you have forgotten who I am, just look at my name!

Last year we met up at 7 pm. We could do the same, it will give folks who are at the conference 1 hour from when it ends to decompress etc. if they need it. If people get there earlier, we could definitely get going when everyone who wants to go is there.
Without knowing what's what at the Westin in Long Beach, I'd suggest meeting at the couches and chairs in the lobby.
If those who are going have a better plan for time and place, I hope you will post about it. I was originally thinking a little bit earlier (15 minutes or so) but realized that this may not give folks enough time after the conference to go to their rooms etc. especially if they are not staying at the Westin.
After I check in and get my things in my room, it's my intent to be at the lobby area so if anyone is already there, it'll give a little time to visit before we walk over to King's Fish House.

| In addition to those who are going to the IEA Conference and post on the EIDB, if you are attending or traveling with a friend/spouse please feel free to bring them along, and also if you live in the Long Beach/Los Angeles vicinity and you are not attending the Conference, but you post here, I hope you will consider joining in, as well. |

True.
Some folks are going to show up at the restaurant directly and some will be meeting at the Westin lobby at 7 pm. We could have between 9 to 15 people total. We will have to check with the restaurant on how to handle the reservation given that. |

For those who have been to the area before...I've been trying to ascertain whether or not I should rent a car. My self pres anxiety as well as my 7 fix are afraid I'm going to be trapped in the hotel with not enough options and too reliant on taxis. Are there enough restaurants within walking distance?
Any thoughts?

The Wayfarer,
I've never been to Long Beach but from checking out what is around the hotel, I'd say there's a lot to enjoy within walking distance.
Google map with hotel and restaurants - http://goo.gl/maps/gdzT
If you decide to go to Parker's light house, a swanky place that Crooner mentioned, there are links higher up in the page, and the Lounge is more affordable than the main restaurant. There's supposed to be live music and such, too.
In the Trip Advisor link below if you click "Map" for any of the restaurants a map with all the restaurants is displayed, and you can check things out that way, as well.

If you click on map, you can see the places and click on the ones that are close to read more about them.
Perhaps it will be useful to those of you who will be staying longer.

Thanks Shakti. I did google map some of the nearby places, I just wasn't sure if it was one of those things where things look relatively easy to access but are difficult to get to in practice. I think I'll take my chances and not rent a car. Although I do want to visit that aquarium that's nearby.

| That's what I would do, too, if I were staying longer (visit the aquarium and not rent a car - I have this impression that could be misguided that parking is something like $17 a day). I'd probably try the Greek place, the Crepe place maybe, something along the waterfront or at least a walk and there was some other middle eastern-ish place I think on Trip Advisor that looked like it had a certain something in the decor and food that drew me, but I didn't check into how far away it was from the hotel since my time is limited to just one evening and one morning. |

The parking at the aquarium is $8.00 for all day. That's where we park.... The public parking in downtown L.B. is self-service, which means you have to have the CORRECT change to get your car out.
