Some concerns that I may have about the army, and why most of them probably aren't justified:
1. Exposure to sun. While some trainings are conducted during evening/night time, there are also trainings during strong UV radiation hours. However, army clothes are pretty long and helmets, hats and sunscreen are widely used. 2. Food. Lots of people dislike army food, but from a brief research I've done it's actually pretty nutritious and for the most part low in saturated and trans-fats. Lots of physical activity will ensure that it gets converted to energy. And taste is not high up there on my priorities anyway. 3. Really hard trainings. I'm a little afraid (the thought of well, how hard can it get?), but just because something isn't comfortable doesn't mean that it's not good for me in the long run. Nothing wrong with challenging myself. Besides, if I enlist, it will be for 3 years, not my entire lifespan. 4. Oxidative stress. Everyone brings their coffee, I'll bring my green tea and slap it with ECGC. 5. Nasty people. Not all army staff are known for their delicate manners. Guess I'll have to Cyto it up.
Of course, I haven't yet made a decision. I still have tons of other options. But I'm giving this one a serious consideration.

A couple of things:
1. I actually would expect the training to be about 50/50 at best. Because when training for anything you want the training to be harder then the real thing. You don't choose when to fight, so you got to be ready for fights in the day, which means training in the day. 2. You will get healthy options, yes, I would imagine. You won't have junk food. But if the food is like here you'll get options that are fine occassionally provided daily. Bacon and eggs everyday are offered (ok, for you maybe not the bacon, but the eggs for sure). But they won't serve food that weiges you down, and you'll burn those calories to muscle like you said. 3. Training will be rough. But plenty of worst shape made it through and survived, so will you. 4. Good luck! That depends on your xo and direct leader. 5. No idea there, but here they are nasty for the most part. The nice guys like me get scared off. |

Thanks for the tips.
Have you been in the army or ever considered joining?

Just sitting on a computer is a risky activity. When you look at the screen you forget to blink, this results in dry eyes and you begin to develop symptoms of computer vision syndrome. Computer use also exposes you to low levels of electromagnetic radiation, degraded air quality (loss of anions, elevated CO2 levels in closed/poorly ventilated rooms), skin dryness (loss of moisture in computer environments), back and neck problems (poor posture), carpal tunnel syndrome (repetitive mouse movements), psychological problems such as anxiety and depression (according to academic research), etc. And obviously, the full rainbow of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
Last year, Steve Jobs died at 56. Dennis Ritchie, inventor of C programming language, died at 70. I'm not sure if this anecdotal evidence means much, but it's there.
Computer use may also be addictive as indicated by some EIDB members' difficulty to leave the board despite repeated attempts to do so, and their need to resort to begging moderators to lock down their account as they've lost self control.
The vast amount of information on the Internet may have it down sides as well. Just as junk food can lead to obesity, junk information can lead to new forms of ignorance.

I know to much to want to join it if I have other possibilities. It's not a matter of life or death. It's a cultural thing. The military attracts 6's who are either so or sp (not sure which yet). As a sx 9 I'm pretty on the opposite spectrum. Everything would be too intense for me. I wouldn't fit in. If you don't fit in the military, you stay on the bottom till you get kicked out. The people inside I won't connect with. It's a very masculine culture. Lots of talk of how you want to kick someone[blocked]or what you do with a female. I don't do either. Kicking[blocked]I'm pretty neutral about, but with females I get really, really, screwed up about (talking about how you want to make sex). No idea why. But it does. Unless you are putting it in a really romantic context, I get bent out of shape. Something about me believes with almost religious conviction that sex is an act of love, and should only be about love. That's another tangent altogether.
Back to military, I could never join army. No matter what position I sign up for, its way to easy for them to say "You're reassigned to frontline infantry." Way too easy. Marines it's worst, since its mostly that. With the navy you are on an airconditioned ship. It's safe and day to day its still distinctly military but its easy to get comfortable in. Airforce its even easier, since you are in a building most of the time rather then outside or in a metal hull.
I wish you luck on your tea thing. Here in the states, everyone in military drinks coffee. It's very ingrained in culture. They'd laugh if you said you wanted tea instead. Russians and Chinese drink tea, not Americans. In boot camp here, they take away everything you have except a few wallet photos. So you can't bring in your tea. If you want your caffeine you get it from coffee. Period. Maybe after camp you can as part of your personal items bring tea, but you provide it on your own. How difficult that is, I don't know. But US military is different then Israeli, so they'll be more accommodating. How much so, I don't know. |

I read The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery...one of the best books you'll ever read (French author...of course...and I'm not being shi-shi.) And she extolled the virtues of tea as opposed to bitter yucky obvious coffee. And I thought, for that one moment in the book...oh, but...coffee is SO much better. I felt acutely American...no...it was barbarianized (how painful for soc 4!) And oh how I wanted to love the tea sentiment...but just couldn't.
I love coffee more. Getting a motel room with coffee right now. Coffee can be so rich and complex or just f-ck me in the bushes strong and direct.
F-ck the French. Pthwwww! |

Haha, I know that tea is better then coffee. But you can't spell me in military. It's a cultural thing. You get many people who first join who don't drink coffee. But as you on a daily basis wake up at O dark hundred, you feel the fatigue set in, and you see all the higher ups drinking it and your friends too. So you get some sips, just to make the mornings easier, but it tastes disgusting. Everyone slides from there at their own pace till they reach their new equilbrium, with the average being two cups every working day.
Coffee has its own appeal to me though. I've always, always drank it black. To the point I find flavored creamers disgusting. If I'm feeling regal I might but some whole milk in it, but thats it.
Coffee's bitterness helps me wake up. |

Alternative medicine.
Re confrontation: Yeah, me too, but there's gotta be a middle ground. The particular discipline I'm involved in is very unhealthy social 6-ish politically.
If I wasn't sick of practicing I think it would have been good for me to get involved politically though. It's sad, but I've given up on my previously chosen profession. My heart is broken and I'm tired and frustrated. I'm spent, and I'm a sell-out. I just want to get paid.

A poem I pinned to purge.
The Trespass
In this moral toil of desecrated soil, I 'm inking with blood and grave, this vampire enclave, the day of rage. Fury at the nerve, disturbed by the absurd. Putting my heart in my hand, having it analyzed and scrutinized, subcategorized - while it dies. Watch me turn cold. You think you know me? Well your foolish assumptions guarantees you know me no more. |

Thanks for the reply. The list of items you can bring with you to bootcamp is signficantly longer here, and includes items ranging from an iPhone to make-up.
The military here does seem to have a lot of us-vs-them mentality 6s which I struggle to tap into especially when it comes down to the all too common 'death-to-arabs' theme.
As for talking dirty about women, I think it's an act of levity that's done to relieve tension. Women need more respect from those guys, but it's not my battle to fight.
Personally, I don't view intimate relations as something reserved to people in love with each other, which I guess makes me the opposite of you in that regard. I don't need to love the partner or even know their name to enjoy the act.
My convictions though are stronger in the tea vs coffee debate, where I'm definitely siding with tea. Very few people really understand tea, though - I absolutely cringe when I see people who describe themselves as tea lovers using tea bags.
