I've done my first day of training at my new job a few days ago, Disneyworld, and after 7 hours of psyching up for the company I feel happy with my job. I've always loved the company, and now I feel excited to be able to help people. On the afternoon after the training, I had fun exploring the areas employees only can visit in Magic Kingdom. Two days ago, I went to Animal Kingdom for free and simply walked around, exploring the areas. I was proud to be part of this, and even helped make a few memories by helping families take photos so whole families could have pictures done.
I'm happy with my job. But I wonder. Do 9's enjoy amusement parks, where they can merge into crowds as they are vacation and generally happy? Is it just me?
There is another aside as well. If anyone happens to visit Disneyland this summer and beyond, hit me up. I can help you save some money. |

Sounds like fun.
I personally would like to work somewhere with more thrill-rides and roller coasters. Do employees get to ride for free? |

Employees can enter the four main amusement parks for free 95% of the year as many times they want, the water parks in spring and fall for free, and generally 50% off admission for other entry fees. |

I must not be a 9 then.
Worked at an amusement park (back in '05) and it nearly destroyed me (not kidding). The only parts I enjoyed about it were the fountains and getting to go to the secluded tree-infused picnic grounds at halloween to paint kids' faces. There was sort of a heavy masochistic enjoyment of other parts of the experience, feelings that still come up for me from time to time. But mostly I'm still not over it.
I don't enjoy amusement parks in general though. Too much going on, and some feel too simulated, which I know is the whole point but it creeps me out.
I'm sure Disneyworld is quite different than King's Island though (I remember liking most of epcot and the 'it's a small world' ride), so I hope you can keep up your enthusiasm.

That park seems like the more "standard" amusement park. Reminds me of paramount kings dominion in Virgina. It was dirty and the people looked overworked and unhappy. I was happy to visit it once to ride the many roller coasters, but I wouldn't go back and I don't have a love for it.
Disney seems at least different. Since it is the tourist capital of the world so it can allow insanely high prices. Those prices help fund the 30,000k union employees in the parks, and as a result they aren't quite so overworked which allows room for more courteous behavior. |

Yeah, KI used to belong to Paramount, and was how you described PKD.
Mmm, I'd imagine disney employees would be treated much better, like you say. I was definitely overworked and underpaid by the end of my time at KI. Was a completely depressing hell hole, along with all the park guests who looked like they just crawled out of their horrible wherevers and who treated staff like dirt and like they alone owned the park because they had a "season pass". I had no enjoyment trying to make those people happy (and I didn't try to, which got me into trouble more than a few times).
Disneyworld in comparison was much cleaner. And definitely at a higher standard. But yeah, I'd be hesitant to work at an amusement park again, even if it were like where you're working. I also disliked my time spent at universal studios in LA when I went there (well, rather I was forced to go. heh. Maybe that's the difference). Maybe it's a sp/sx thing but I don't like merging into crowds and don't like "people" or being part of a company in that way, even if I'm treated well.
I'm glad you can be happy wandering around on your own and/or merging with the environment. Sounds like you have a lot more means of control and freedom to enjoy yourself.

I personally wouldn't like to be around hordes of people for all that long. I get drained by too much social contact. But working at an amusement park once and getting some free rides sounds like it would be fun for a little while. Of course, all the rides would get boring eventually.
I also don't resonate with the idea of liking to be around "happy people." For most of my life I actually hated anyone that seemed "happy." I despised happiness in others. I wanted to be around miserable people. People full of ache and sorrowful longing.
Now I'm a little more open. |

I'm sure there's more to it than just being a 9. Maybe sx 1sts are more likely to enjoy merging with the environment...maybe sp 1sts not so much. Maybe triple withdrawns would hate it no matter what the stacking. I would have been right at home at Woodstock though.
Come to think of it, my nephew is a 9sp/so. He joined us at the Ren Fest one year and he was a stick-in-the-mud. He wanted to go home after a half hour and he pretty much ruined our day.

On my first afternoon as I popped up from under magic kingdom, I didn't go on any rides because it is packed from spring break. But I did watch some ducks. As usual, they were adorable. |

| When I was younger, I liked going to amusement parks. Never thought about working there, not sure if I'd like it. Dealing with lots of people on a regular base.. I'm not sure if I could get accustomed with that. |

Nobody in the world could love Disney World more than my 56-year-old 9w1 dad. He LOVES it. He says when he retires he wants to move to Disney World and drive the Epcot-to-MGM boat.
I like it too. I find that it's different from other amusement parks like 6 flags, where I like the rollercoasters but am quickly drained by the crowds and all the stimulation, as well as grossed out by the food and other aspects of the park. This probably does have to do with variant (I'm sp/sx), I'm sure an sx/so 9 would take to crowds and loud noises better than I do. But I would guess that something that appeals to all or most 9s about Disney World and places like it is the fact that there's actually an attempt to create a fantasy world there. It's not just a place to do fun stuff, but depending on your capacity for suspension of disbelief, it can feel like you're in a special alternate reality. If you have a problem with happiness in others you're obviously going to hate Disney World. But if you're a stereotypical Pollyanna 9w1 and you can ignore the flagrant commercialism, it feels like you're in alternate-universe-9-happyworld. Maybe because Walt Disney was a 9.

I'm so glad you just said that. I'm taking a pass on going to 6 flags this weekend. Even The Westin La Cantera Resort, Casita King Parlor suite could not tempt me to go this time. Oh, how I hate the energy from the crowds at 6 flags. I've never been to Disney World, but have been fearing it might be the same as 6 Flags. I'm so glad it is not. Thank God. lol

The alternate reality thing is quite a big deal in Disney. One of our 4 tenets as employees is "Show" where were are supposed to in essence be conductive of the atmosphere. That means for example if you are part of tomorrow land, you and your costume stays only in tomorrow land. You always, without a doubt, say there is only one Micky, Donald, Goofy, etc. running around, and they move quickly with the help of the pixie dust. You are part of the show, and you are supposed to enjoy spreading and protecting the Disney magic. Disney is a business; the business of giving you magic in a fantasy land.
To give you an idea of how important protecting the magic is, Disney tenets rank Show higher then Efficiency.
I've done my second day of training, and I'm digging it. Disney supplies its own laundry service for the costumes you provide, and they gave me the first set of non-skid shoes I can use for free. (I'm part of the only department that wears white shoes, everyone else wears dark shoes) |

lol,
I assure you, the two are the same only in that both are amusment parks. (Those other amusements parks don't care if you have food allergies, for example, while in Disney if you say you do the chef herself will come to you to talk with you to make something you enjoy.)
Fun fact: Between 2010 and the end of 2011 Disney custom made over 400,000 orders due to allergies. Disney also holds the 2nd largest single food service shop in the world, despite being open half as long as the the other competitors. Only the McDonalds Tokyo location open 24 hours is larger. |

ChemicalArt, my 4w3 best friend worked at Disney for a long time, first as "a friend of" Tigger and Buzz Lightyear, then dancing in the parades. At first he was incredibly in love with the whole "put on a show" thing, too. Maybe the withdrawn types in general like having this special world to retreat to?

JoL, would you consider yourself more on the extraverted side? As the introvert extraordinaire, I could never see myself enjoying crowds or "scenes." I think enjoying this kind of thing is more related to extraversion than E9. My first thought upon entering a crowded bar or club is "Get me out of here!"

I test slightly on the introvert side, but under stress I withdraw big-time. I spend months alone sometimes. I've never been a social person and I don't have a lot of friends, but I do like being in a crowd either alone or with one other person, as long as noone is bumping into me. I don't like the feeling of being crowded though, and wouldn't stay in a crowded bar or restaurant for very long.

I have a hunch it's related to being a sx9. I like a lot of stimulation.
