Final Balance: Breaking Through: Using the Enneagram to Develop Yourself as a Helping Professional, March - September 2009

Ultimately, what will determine your success as a helping professional is the quality of your presence, the depth of your connection with your clients, and the timeliness, fit, and psychological insight of your responses. To work with your clients effectively, techniques and formulas are not enough. You will want to constantly grow as a person, to deepen your self-knowledge, and to clarify your own personal issues so as to be an unbiased and clear sounding board for the people you work with. In short, you will want to be aware of where you are already strong, and where you need to develop.

In our third teleclass series James Flaherty of New Ventures West and Don Riso and Russ Hudson of The Enneagram Institute will focus exclusively on how the Enneagram can be applied for the personal development of helping professionals themselves. This includes coaches, therapists, HR professionals, managers, ministers, spiritual directors, acting coaches, directors, and any one-on-one practitioners that work to develop individuals.

During each type call, Russ, Don, and James will spend 30 minutes discussing the strengths and liabilities of the type as a helping professional. They will be joined on the call by two practicing helping professionals for 45-60 minutes, who will participate in a 5-way discussion about their experiences working one-on-one with clients. During this time, questions may be emailed to the moderator for discussion. These two exemplars will prepare a brief personal reflection of real-life strengths and limitations that have come up for them frequently in their practice, which will be distributed to all participants the week before the call. The last 30 minutes of each call will be devoted to wrapping up observations about the discussion and answering emailed questions.

Even if you are not the type being coached on a particular call, it will be instructive for you to participate as you will find that the issues discussed will be the same as those of many of your clients. In short, the insight you gain will be applicable in your practice even if the person being coached is not your primary type.
