Breaking Through: Using the Enneagram to Develop Yourself as a Helping Professional

Ultimately, what will determine your success as a helping professional is the quality of your presence, the depth of your connection with your clients, and the timeliness, fit, and psychological insight of your responses. To work with your clients effectively, techniques and formulas are not enough. You will want to constantly grow as a person, to deepen your self-knowledge, and to clarify your own personal issues so as to be an unbiased and clear sounding board for the people you work with. In short, you will want to be aware of where you are already strong, and where you need to develop.

In our third teleclass series James Flaherty of New Ventures West and Don Riso and Russ Hudson of The Enneagram Institute will focus exclusively on how the Enneagram can be applied for the personal development of helping professionals themselves. This includes coaches, therapists, HR professionals, managers, ministers, spiritual directors, acting coaches, directors, and any one-on-one practitioners that work to develop individuals.

The Enneagram is an exquisite template for providing psychological insight to accelerate human development. As a helping professional, you have an Enneagram type.

  • What are your talents and blind spots?
  • How does your own personality type either serve or get in the way of more effective interactions with your clients?
  • How can you use your personality and your innate Essential and intuitive capacities more effectively?

This series of telecalls will develop these themes in concrete and specific ways.

Our intention is that every participant will have a breakthrough in their ability to work more effectively with their clients, especially with clients who have been historically difficult and in situations that have been less than satisfying for all involved. Don, Russ, and James will interact with and guide individual helping professionals on the call, emphasizing the connection between their Being and the results that are produced. We will entertain real-time questions and dive deeply into the personal difficulties that arise for you in working with your clients.

Even if you are not the type being coached on a particular call, it will be instructive for you to participate as you will find that the issues discussed will be the same as those of many of your clients. In short, the insight you gain will be applicable in your practice even if the person being coached is not your primary type.

The Format of the Series

The first 2-hour session will be an overview of the series and a review of relevant Enneagram and human development principles. This will be followed by nine sessions, starting with Type One (The Reformer) and culminating with a review session of the whole series.

The layout of each type call will be:

  • 30 minutes discussing the strengths and liabilities of the type as a helping professional;
  • 45-60 minute 5-way discussion with two practicing helping professionals, who will speak about their experiences working one-on-one with clients;
  • 30-45 minute to wrap up observations about the discussion and answering emailed questions.

Anytime during the call, questions may be emailed to the moderator for discussion. The two helping professional exemplars will prepare a brief personal reflection of real-life strengths and limitations that have come up for them frequently in their practice, focusing on questions provided before the call. These personal reflections will be distributed to all participants the week before the call to provide a focus for the discussion and to be a springboard for gaining insight into what each exemplar needs to develop.

This third series of 11 telecalls will begin March 11th and finish September 8th, 2009, with approximately two calls per month. It is not necessary either to be a helping professional or to have Enneagram training to participate in this series, although the more preparation and knowledge you bring, the better. (If you need more Enneagram information, we recommend Personality Types or The Wisdom of the Enneagram.) It is, however, necessary for those wishing to be exemplars on the calls to already be practicing with clients one-on-one in a helping profession and to have some degree of Enneagram understanding.

Exemplar Volunteers

If you would like to volunteer to be an exemplar on the call for your Enneagram type, you must be sure of your type and have at least one year of experience in a one-on-one helping profession. You may contact Katy at The Enneagram Institute to discuss your participation. Besides having the opportunity to be coached by James, Russ, and Don, the exemplars will be doing a service to all participants through their self- disclosure and discussion.

This series of telecalls will likely be the last one before James, Don, and Russ give an in-person Enneagram and Integral Coaching Training, most likely at The Barn in Stone Ridge, New York sometime in 2010.
