The Enneagram Cards (TEC) are a kinesthetic, intuitive, and interactive way to learn and apply the Enneagram. They are an exciting new way to deepen your knowledge of the nine types in your daily life as well as to introduce the Enneagram to clients and groups. There are 90 Cards in the full-color set, and they are approximately 3x5 inches in size.

On one side of each of The Enneagram Cards is one of the 90 Key Words, 10 for each type. The Key Words have been field tested and carefully chosen to present a balanced spread among the Levels of Development for each type and to account for other factors operating within the type.

On the reverse side is the authors' illuminating definition which indicates various dimensions of the meaning of the Key Word. Reflecting on the Key Word definition is a concrete way to accelerate self-awareness and the practice of self-observation—one of the primary uses of the Enneagram. The Key Word definition can be used for personal growth, relationships, coaching, counseling, and therapy—making The Enneagram Cards a versatile new tool for a wide variety of personal and professional settings.

Following the definition is a sample sentence that illustrates the Key Word in a natural context. Finally, there is a quotation from one of the five best-selling Riso-Hudson Enneagram books (with page reference) to indicate where you can find more about the Key Word concept and related information. For example, the definition for one of the Key Words for Type Seven in the healthy Levels is "Spontaneous" (Card 61):

"As in responding freely and immediately to stimuli or circumstances without undue restraint or self-inhibition; naturally flowing from an inner impulse or free act. This connotes a degree of out-flowing liveliness, energy, and ebullience. Related to being unconstrained and unselfconscious in one's actions and motivations."

An example of a Key Word definition for Type Four at a lower average Level is "Self-Pitying" (Card 39):

"As in regarding oneself as completely undeserving of the suffering or various kinds of misfortune that one perceives in one's life. The feeling of being sorry for oneself is central to the picture, as is seeking sympathy and exemption from others due to one’s unique and special misfortune or suffering."

All 90 of the Key Word definitions are loaded with meaning and can serve as a springboard for observation, discussion, 360 degree feedback, team building, executive coaching, and mentoring. The Cards are also a great deal of fun to work with and are sure to become a source of creative new insights into yourself and others who are important in your life.

The Enneagram Cards also includes a 25-page color Instruction Booklet that gives guidelines for using the Cards alone, through an Administrator, or in groups, as well as specifying 10 different ways to "sort" (display) the Cards in a variety of individual and group settings. The Instruction Booklet also contains thumbnail sketches of all nine types, a Color Key to the Cards, and background information. Included are the following Sorts for:

  • Self-Identification
  • Identifying Someone Else’s Type
  • Tapping the Unconscious
  • Warming Up the Client
  • Least-Like (Shadow)
  • Administrator-Run Typing
  • Central Self-Image
  • Circle Discussion
  • How We See Each Other
  • 360 Degree Feedback

Endorsements of The Enneagram Cards

"The Cards are an excellent way of introducing the concept to new clients. I have been using them initially with clients whose types we know to proof the Cards. Each time we have come to the same types as what we know. I have been using a standard 5 Card pick, then a second pass to refine. To anyone wishing to gain a greater skill in the Enneagram, these are an excellent way of doing so."

Jennifer Levinson & Alec Gardner

"I have found the Cards to be incredibly beneficial, especially in business settings. The Cards help sceptical executives and team members find their preferred Enneagram Style, in a fun, interactive and non-threatening way…"

Gareth Peddie
The Enneagram Institute of Johannesburg, South Africa

"In my teaching and coaching with the Enneagram, I find it really helpful to have this illuminating series of words that sum up key aspects of each type in a lively and succinct way. As well as all the potential uses in 1-1 coaching and teambuilding, I have used the Cards to good effect as a visual aid when introducing each of the types in groups. Having the words placed at each point of the Enneagram helps keep us all focused and the group begins to make distinctions and connections for themselves. I highly recommend the The Enneagram Cards!"

Janette Blakemore
Leadership Coach & Team Facilitator
The Riso-Hudson Enneagram Centre of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

"The Riso-Hudson Enneagram Cards offer a robust and interactive tool for personal work, professional coaching, and teaching. The Cards heighten the curiosity of users, promote intuitive insights, and deepen the recognition of innate strengths and intrapersonal/interpersonal challenges. Just as the Enneagram continues to reveal layers of our personality patterns, the Cards add value through repeated use by continuing to illuminate subtle patterns previously hidden from the user."
