Master Class: Practicum on Workshop Teaching

The Master Class has been designed to support and accelerate the ability of RH students to teach the Enneagram. The Master Class will help build confidence and readiness to teach; it will also make the teaching process more efficient and effective by helping to clarify the purpose of the RH Enneagram Teacher. The Master Class will also create a higher quality of Enneagram teaching by supplying RH students with a solid variety and depth of teaching materials, resources, usable handouts, workshop plans, advertising copy, and other practical information.

You will leave the Master Class with an armful of notes and information, as well as forms and handouts that you can use to teach the Enneagram yourself. Don and Russ will be personally present and teaching all sessions. In the warm, safe, and accepting "holding atmosphere" that Don and Russ create, you can learn to teach the Enneagram from two of the very best Enneagram teachers in the world today.

Materials for the Master Class will include the ResourceBook, as well as other detailed, practical teaching materials. The Master Class will discuss the practical, personal, and spiritual aspects related to taking on the responsibility of teaching the Enneagram in a mature and compassionate way. Course design, creating personal and group exercises, debriefing exercises, and many other "behind the scenes" teaching issues will be discussed by Don and Russ in detail. Some of the many other topics we will cover include:

• Running a short panel (this is not the "oral tradition"!); the pros and cons of panels.

• Maintaining Presence and energy, illness and traveling issues.
• Dealing with difficult situations and people (disruptive group behavior
• 12 Fourth Way Principles of Inner Work—How and Why the Enneagram is transformative—and much more!

Don and Russ have over 30 years of combined teaching experience, and are the only two major Enneagram teachers to have been both in the Gurdjieff Work and the Ridhwan ("Diamond Heart") School. They will be sharing their vast experience with you about how to teach the Enneagram in a mature, responsible way, and from the orientation of real transformation. This Master Class will likely be offered only every 2-3 years, and is open only to RH students (i.e., those who have been to at least a Part I Training, or who are committed to coming to one within 6 months of this event).

A Retreat on the Higher Aspects of the Enneagram

While there is growing interest among Enneagram students in understanding the higher aspects of the Enneagram, the qualities found there are beyond the normal operation of the personality and the egoic mind. Our personalities cannot even begin to imagine what these domains of the Soul are like, so it is not enough to merely describe them. The Holy Ideas, particularly, cannot be taught in any conventional way—they must be experienced.

However, while exploring these deeper dimensions of reality, we begin to understand firsthand how our Enneagram type’s fixation is a deeply ingrained response to the loss of contact with the very qualities pointed out by the Holy Ideas. We experience “the really Real” with the Holy Ideas—and we also understand what is lost when we shut down from this, forget ourselves, and lose contact with Presence. This very recognition deepens our commitment to awakening, and makes our practice something we love rather than something we feel we should do.

We will learn how the Virtues and the Holy Ideas are the fruit of practice. The nine Virtues (Serenity, Humility, Authenticity, Equanimity, Non-Attachment, Courage, Sobriety, Innocence, and Engagement) represent the qualities cultivated in a heart purified from the Passions, and the nine Holy Ideas (Perfection, Freedom, Harmony (Hope), Origin, Transparency (Omniscience), Faith, Divine Plan, Truth, and Love) represent the perspectives of the clarified Mind, freed from its fixated patterns of thinking. As we work through the various issues blocking and distorting our clear-minded and open-hearted response to the world, we begin to experience the true nature of Reality and to become a person of Essence.

This Retreat is an opportunity to practice, to contemplate, and to find out what the Virtues and Holy Ideas are about in our own experience. This is an advanced training, not an introduction to Enneagram or the types as such. We will, however, explore all nine types from the perspective of their highest potential and see how all nine are part of the whole of consciousness—and the whole of our own psyche. The Retreat will have longer meditations and exercises than our usual courses, as well as silent periods and time to integrate our new realizations. Participants should come ready to be challenged, to let go of preconceptions, and to open to deeper aspects of themselves. Having a regular spiritual practice is recommended, as well as the ability to contain potentially profound challenges to the ego identity. This is emphatically not a business workshop nor is it designed for coaches or therapists or for other pragmatic uses. Time will also be given to exploring ways of sustaining and integrating our realizations in the midst of our everyday lives.

 

Other Master Classes and Retreats

In response to requests for continuing education by Riso-Hudson students for ongoing work beyond the current Training Program, The Enneagram Institute offers an advanced course annually or bi-annually. In 2003, the topic was "The Higher Aspects of the Enneagram: The Virtues and the Holy Ideas." In 2005, we offered a Practicum on Workshop Teaching. Future courses will include in-depth study of the Levels of Development, the Three Instincts, spirituality and Inner Work, as well as particular applications such as Business and Organizational applications, the Enneagram for Therapists, the Enneagram and Relationships, and so forth.

This five-day residential course is a rare opportunity to engage in deepening your knowledge and personal work with the Enneagram. A substantial amount of new material is always presented, along with experiential exercises and meditations.
