DON RISO, M.A., co-founder, was one of the foremost teachers and developers of the Enneagram in the world today. He passed away on August 30th, 2012. The most published and best-selling author in the field, he was President of Enneagram Personality Types, Inc., co-founder of The Enneagram Institute, and a Founding Director of the International Enneagram Association. At his death, Don had been teaching the Enneagram worldwide for over 25 years. His five best-selling books, The Wisdom of the Enneagram, Personality Types, Understanding the Enneagram, Discovering Your Personality Type, and Enneagram Transformations have sold over a million copies worldwide and are the most influential books in the field. They are available in German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Dutch, Hungarian, Portuguese and other foreign editions.
Don was raised in New Orleans, LA and was a Jesuit in the New Orleans Province for 13 years. He holds degrees in English and Philosophy graduating Magna cum Laude, was elected to the Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu, and was a Ford Foundation Fellow at Stanford in Communication (Social Psychology). After Don left the Jesuits, he began full time work on the Enneagram in 1975. A lifelong spiritual seeker, Don was a member of the Gurdjieff Foundation in New York and was also a member of the Ridhwan School (Diamond Heart®) of A.H. Almaas. He and Russ Hudson were the only Enneagram authors and teachers who have actually been members of both the Gurdjieff Work and the Diamond Approach®.
Don’s contributions (along with those of Russ Hudson) to the Enneagram are described in detail in Enneagram Contributions. Convinced that the Enneagram would not be taken seriously without grounding in modern psychology, Don devoted himself to clearly and systematically describing the types and the elements of the system as a whole. Don’s innovations (such as the detailed systematic type descriptions, the popular type names, descriptions of the arrows and the wings, the Hornevian Groups, and so forth) are now so widely used that many believe that these discoveries were part of an original body of Enneagram materials from either Ichazo or Naranjo, or some earlier source. However, Don’s original work (not only including the above but, most notably, the Levels of Development) is the foundation for virtually all work now being done with the Enneagram. His first book, Personality Types, was published in 1987 after 12 years of work and has become the benchmark in the field. The Levels of Development, the Psychic Structures, the RHETI questionnaire, the IVQ (instinctual variant questionnaire)—and many other practical applications—are possible due to Don’s groundbreaking work.
The Enneagram is an invaluable tool for the growth of consciousness in human beings. When the personality types (and the system as a whole) are rightly understood, they help illuminate what is so often unconscious—and therefore hidden—in us. The Enneagram helps turn the light of awareness onto those features of our personality that operate automatically, not only keeping us “asleep,” but so often getting us into more trouble, more conflicts, and increasing our suffering and that of others. But, of course, the Enneagram is not automatic, much less magic. In fact, it is not something that can even be all that useful unless we have some degree of awareness, as well as the willingness to work on ourselves with honesty and humility. Given these, however, the Enneagram is one of the great helps available for alleviating human suffering. Through self-observation, we can come to a deeper level of self-awareness and self-realization. Through this process, things can begin to change. Transformation becomes not just an idea, but a reality. When enough individuals begin to change, the world will begin to change.
RUSS HUDSON, co-founder, is one of the principal scholars and innovative thinkers in the Enneagram world today. He is Executive Director of Enneagram Personality Types, Inc. and co-Founder of The Enneagram Institute. He has been co-teaching the Enneagram Professional Training Programs since 1991, and is a Founding Director and former Vice-President of the International Enneagram Association. He is also co-author of The Wisdom Of The Enneagram, Personality Types (Revised Edition), Understanding the Enneagram (Revised Edition), Discovering Your Personality Type (Revised Edition), and The Power Of The Enneagram (audio tape). He also assisted Don Riso in writing Enneagram Transformations. He holds a degree in East Asian Studies from Columbia University in New York, from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
Gayle Scott is Senior Faculty of The Enneagram Institute and has been teaching Authorized Riso-Hudson Enneagram Workshops, Riso-Hudson Trainings, and Teacher Certification courses in the US and internationally since 2005. She leads the Enneagram Institute’s Teacher Certification Program, supervising and certifying students to teach Authorized Workshops, and facilitating the required Master Class: Practicum on Workshop Teaching.
Scott Is a Certified Integral Life Coach with New Ventures West in San Francisco. http://www.newventureswest.com/
She maintains an Enneagram teaching and consulting practice as well as her Integral Coaching practice in Boulder, Colorado. She facilitates various Enneagram and film-related workshops and seminars across the US and Canada.
Gayle is a veteran of the Hollywood and Canadian film and television industries with over 20 years’ experience in production. In the mid ’90’s, her work with actors inspired her to combine her professional expertise with her passion for the Enneagram. She began employing the Enneagram as a tool for psychological character development in scriptwriting and film acting, leading to her pioneering specialty of Enneagram Consultant to Actors and Screenwriters. Her clientele has included many well-known actors, opera singers, writers, and directors.
She has been involved in ongoing spiritual practice since her introduction to Transcendental Meditation in the early ‘70’s, inspired by her favorite Beatle, George Harrison — a fellow Enneagram Type One seeker. She also practiced Vipassana Meditation in the Burmese tradition for many years with S.N. Goenka.
Pursuing her ongoing interest in Women’s Spirituality and the Divine Feminine, Gayle served on the Board of Directors of Women’s Alliance, a non-profit organization that produced “Her Voice, Our Voices Solstice Camp,” an annual international women’s summer camp featuring arts, ritual, music, movement, literature, sociopolitics, speakers, healers, and indigenous practitioners from around the world, in Northern California 1985 – 1995. It was during the 1988 Solstice Camp that she was introduced to the Enneagram.
In 1999 she became a student of the Diamond Approach® in the Ridhwan School of A.H. Almaas. For three years she was a member of Claudio Naranjo’s US-based SAT group. She is also an advanced graduate of the Hoffman Quadrinity Process.
A founding Board Member of the Southern California Chapter of the IEA, and former Director of the Enneagram Institute of Los Angeles, Gayle relocated to Boulder, Colorado, in 2002 to pursue her psychospiritual studies in the Diamond Approach®. She lives high up in the awesome Rocky Mountains surrounded by the blessings, inspiration, and sacred rhythms of nature.
Since 1989 I have been studying and working with the sacred psychology of the Enneagram as an essential resource for understanding human behavior and motivation, enhancing relationships, and realizing spiritual potential. I hold it as one of the most profound and powerful tools for self-knowledge and personal development available today. In 1993 when I attended my first Part 1 Training with Don and Russ, I was impressed and awed by the depth and profundity of their work, in particular the Core Dynamics / Levels of Development that masterfully gave the Enneagram its vertical dimension. I am honored to have studied and worked alongside these pioneers in the field, and thrilled to be bringing the wisdom of the Enneagram deeper into the world.

It is an honor and privilege to be a Faculty Member of the Enneagram Institute and to teach through the Riso-Hudson Insight Approach to the Enneagram. Russ and Don have discovered a profound map and mechanism for ongoing transformation and expansion that relies on mindful self-observation utilizing radical acceptance, non-judgment and compassion for oneself and others. The Insight Approach provides the merciful lens for this observation, and the way out of one’s acquired habits of suffering. It is my passion and aim to make this profound tool available to those individuals and groups across the USA and Canada.

I am truly grateful for and honored by the opportunity to serve on the Faculty of The Enneagram Institute, teaching and representing Don’s and Russ’ incredibly rich and precise Enneagram discoveries, insights, and teachings. My own personal work with the Enneagram has been and continues to be a fascinating and powerful journey that has had an impact on me far greater than I ever could have imagined. I find that teaching and sharing the Enneagram with others is a delightful and rewarding experience. As I work with groups and individuals using the Enneagram to gain deeper levels of self-awareness and self-realization, I cherish being witness to the shifts, insights, and transformations that occur. There are many powerful applications of the Enneagram and the Riso-Hudson Approach provides the opportunity to tailor the application to the needs of the individuals or group. The Enneagram truly changes lives and I am honored to be doing this work.
